An award? For my little blog?

As most of you know, I'm pretty new to this blogging-with-an-audience thing. Learning as I go!

So this week, I got a Versatile Blogger Award from Tena at Success Just Clicks. I had to look to see exactly what this meant! It seems to be an award for new bloggers, and it's a very cool thing!

The rules of this award are that I must share 7 things about myself and then pass along the award to 15 blogs that are either new or are new to me. I don't tend to branch out my blog reading very much, so I'm going to post this before the full list of 15 is up, then find new blogs as I go along!

Seven things about myself, and West, of course. Since this really is his blog..

1. I drive a TINY car. It's a Chevy Sprint, and it's a 5 door, but that's basically ALL it is (made of doors). It's kind of hilarious when I park somewhere (like the gas station today) and I've got four dogs loaded in the back, plus a passenger! I once fit 3 months of "living stuff", 3 dog crates, Archie, Cujo/Koodo my prev foster (huuuge dog!) and myself in my tiny little car and drove it over the rockies. It's kind of a joke. :) West likes it far better now that the muffler is attached!

2. I wish we had a local CU class to attend. I think both West and Archie would benefit hugely from such a class, but it's very hard to teach and attend at the same time!
Sigh. One day, maybe.

3. I love free stuff. I enter lots of contests (and win some!) and freebie entries. I enjoy couponing, and once got 4 free-natura-dog-food coupons, one bag of which is still around!

4. I have really cool friends. I was at a Rally trial back in April, and a friend was entering a raffle. She had a couple extra tickets and wasn't sure where to enter them.. I told her to throw them in the GO! prize and that I'd buy the food off her to use for West (who is still getting a mix). She said if she won, I could just have it. Almost two months later, I was at an agility trial when another friend approached me to let me know she won that raffle and had kept the food (all this time!) for West! How cool is that?

5. West really wants to sleep on the bed. He would like very much if I'd kick Archie out of the house, and then West could be as bad as he wanted! He's sitting on the floor with his head resting on the bed, looking very pitiful. There are several comfy dog beds available.

6. Archie is totally addicted to tissues. I'm allergic to most every plant out there, so spring is a rough time. I go through many kleenexes, and Archie is obsessed with finding and eating them. It's to the point now where he hears me blow my nose and comes running! Bad dog! :)

7. I'm really bad at writing things that fit a framework! Listing these 7 things has been awfully hard!

And now for a list of blogs. Let's see how many I can come up with.

After Gadget Not new, or new to me, but very good!

Vet On The Edge New to me!

BZ Training Fairly new to me.

Through a Guide's Eyes Thanks to Sharon for suggesting this one!

The Homeless Parrot

Syn's Blog

Doggie Ideas with great training plans and steps!

Children In Perspective a brand new blog by a young man who I met through animal rescue, who writes about all sorts of things..

That's 8... I will add more as I think of them!

Some time out and about..

West mostly comes everywhere now. Today, we would have practiced at the centre, but instead, practiced in a friend's yard. So we just took Gypsy to CU class, came home and got the others to go play.

Mom pulled up near the gate, and I just let West out. He ran to the gate while I got Archie out, then I let them and Gypsy into the yard. Oh, and Sheela too! Mom went to do some shopping, and I headed for the back of the yard to turn the water on. The 4 dogs just played and ran and sniffed. I tossed a couple balls, but mostly, they wanted to investigate.

Once I had the water on, I decided I needed to do something with West and Gypsy so I could work Archie. Popped West in the solid crate, Gypsy in the zipper one beside him, and left sheela loose. Archie and I worked a few 2x2s, some tables, and some jump sequences. I put him over the dog walk a couple times, and he was great.

Shifted the dogs around, let West out, put Archie in. West did some tables, a couple jumps, and tried to get him over the dogwalk. He did go over once. He's not worried about being high, but has no sense of where his feet are! Silly pup!

Now, I put West in the fabric crate. Last time he was in one, he scratched it up, so I was watching him closely. He didn't relax, but he didn't claw at the crate either! Good dog.

I rotated through a couple more times. Mom came back, and I worked Sheela a little. Loaded everyone back in the car and went to the gas station.

The only available pump in the shade was right near the door. 6 months ago, I would have parked to the side and waited for a farther one to be free, but I figured West could handle it. And he did! He watched a few people go by, without tension or barking. He sat on the front seat with the window wide open while I pumped the fuel. Even when some men walked by! He's come a looong way!

Once we got home, he ran around a bit, then jumped through the window into the car. This is his new favourite spot, sitting on the passenger seat of my car, watching the world. And he's discovered he can get there on his own when the window is open. Sigh.

It's been a while, but he's come a LONG way!

Does everyone remember the little biting border collie pup that I offered to foster for Sheena?

I think I misplaced him.

He's watching Tim eat his yummy sandwich across the table, I think.

Please note the little white fluff poking out from his back end? This is his TAIL. and I can SEE it, even though he's being TOUCHED by a MAN! Now that's progress!

Sorry we haven't been updating as much as we should, but he's coming along nicely :) I am proud!

He also came along to Archie's agility class on Thursday morning. Was ok around Chris and Ray, as long as he kept his distance. Did some tunnels, and a few jumps. Good boy.

West's grooming session

I know I'm way behind. We took the dogs up for a hike at our usual spot by the dump, and found it covered in free range cows! We just kept the dogs on leash till we were past them, but of course, West found a delightful cowpie to smear himself in. Once he was mostly dry, I took the brush to him. In the past, brushing has been very stressful for West, but you can see here that he's staying voluntarily. I tried hard to release him for a play while he was relaxed. He's still a bit smelly, but it's wearing off.. Sigh.

Kyjen Firehose Tug Toy Review

The boys LOVE new, tough toys, and this Kyjen Fire Hose is a great example.

The elastic tug makes a great handle, to keep my hands out of the grabbing teeth of a certain canine who is not very careful!

West liked the toy, but it's hard to get him to play on cue for the camera. Archie, on the other hand, was more than willing to play, pose and tug!

West chased Archie who chased the Firehose...

The only downside I could find was that the handle gives Archie a good place to hook his mouth around, so I'll need to do a little training to ensure he grabs the hose, not the handle! As you can see, he'd prefer the handle..

This is better...

West did get a turn, but on video, not pictures..

It makes a great fetch toy too. It throws very nicely, and lands with a "splat" which is perfect for agility training!

After about half an hour of extreme play and tugging, the toy is still almost-new, though a bit muddy!

The boys are thoroughly enjoying this toy. Because of the handle, I wouldn't leave it alone with them (they both would like to chew the handle off), but there isn't much they can tug hard on without damaging! Definitely a win!

This toy was provided free of charge by Kyjen, as part of their Toy Testers program. This review is unbiased.

An afternoon playing

The boys spent the afternoon playing mostly together. I caught a tiny bit on video :)

A weekend of play

West, Archie and I spent a few days house sitting in town. Sunny, one of the dogs I was looking after, was a fantastic playmate for West. Here's some video I got on Friday afternoon:

He also met Lindsay again, which was totally a non-event. Lindsay and I played with the manners minder, and hopefully got some nice video so I can enter a contest to win another one!

I wasn't feeling well, so Friday was otherwise pretty quiet. West spent most of the day playing with Sunny in the Xpen or the back yard.

Saturday, we loaded up and headed to 5star so I could teach. West was so good in the car. When we parked at 5star, I was gathering up the key etc, and someone pulled in beside us and a man LEAPT out of his truck (he must have been in a hurry!) and startled West, who barked a couple of times. Poor West. He recovered quite nicely though!

I brought him into the centre, and he ran amok for a few minutes, then he sat in a crate in the back room while class happened. Afterwards, I brought him out to do a few jumps, and he ran over the aframe a couple times chasing the dogs around. I put his calming cap on him (tons of people outside. I could have moved the car around back, but this seemed easier) and walked him out to the car. He was totally fine, no reactions at all despite the milling people.

We stopped by Lindsay's briefly, and West waited sans-cap in her driveway in the car. He napped, but woke up and watched me when I returned.

From there, we went into town and parked my car. I moved Archie's crate and West into the Santa Fe, then we went up to Ben's vet appointment. West did more waiting in the car (all of which was in the shade, lest you think my dogs are cooking!) then we went to TRU to meet with a friend. More waiting.

Then, I had the two people I was meeting come outside and we let West out (fenced area) to meet them. He quickly was willing to approach both of them, and though he was nervous of the barking dogs nearby, he didn't appear concerned about the strangers at ALL. Fantastic! They were both women, which was helpful for him, I think.

He did let out one sort of surprised half-bark at one point, but within a few seconds, was approaching for pets again. I'm not sure what triggered it, but it may have even been the loudly barking dogs. I need some recordings of barking dogs for both the boys to start getting used to. Leave a comment if you have any in mp3 format!

Back in the car, back to my car, then home. I left West in the Santa Fe, cause he was totally out napping on the seat. He had a good drink and pee when we got home, then crashed out for the rest of the night. Busy day for a little West!!!

Today was far less eventful. We went out for some play, and I saw my aunt and uncle had come to visit. I popped the dogs away and we visited for a couple hours, then took 4 of the dogs to the beach (west, archie, ben and gypsy) for a walk. My uncle is about the most dog-terrifying-appearance person I could imagine.. Tall, facial hair, dark clothes, baseball cap low on his head.. He said even the gas station attendants where he delivers fuel are afraid of him :) Anyway, West and Arch and I hung back about 10' or so and followed them until the dogs could be off leash. After I let him off, West approached my aunt for pets several times throughout the walk. He did not make worried looks or bark at my uncle at all, though he also didn't approach him. We did no specific work though, just walked down and back. My aunt commented that he seems to be doing very well.. and he is!

I figured he'd be tired after all that, but he spent a couple hours trying to get Archie to play with him. Archie tried out his new lifejacket in the water for the first time today, and he wanted to NAP! Poor West misses Sunny, I think :)

My aunt took some photos today, not sure if she got any nice ones, but if she shares, I'll pass them along!

Finally met Mary!

West came with us to agility class last night. I'm house sitting for a few days, and can have the dogs here with me. It was most convenient to have mom meet me at 5star with the boys, so that's what we did.

We got there early, so I brought West in to meet Mary before class. She just stood a few feet from the door, and I brought him in. I asked her not to offer him treats until he'd said hello, and within maybe a minute, he was up on her "hugging" her and soliciting pets. He looked fantastic. Mary asked me what he'd done for agility, so I tossed him over the jump (10") to try and show her his usual frantic bulldoze behaviour, and he took the jump perfectly! Silly pup! He did about 15 of them for Zukes, then I put him in a crate in the back room while we had class.

I brought him out at the end of class to "look at that" with the strangers in the room while others practiced stays and recalls-to-heel. He did very well, and had no reactions at all. By now, the next class was gathering outside the door, so I asked Mary to invite them all in before I put West in the car. She had everyone come in and stand across the room, so we had a big open space with no strangers. I jogged to the door and West came along without concern. He hopped in the car without hesitation, and sat there calmly while I moved Archie's crate into the car, and a few other door-open-and-closings. I put his Cap on him while I ran into Coopers, then he napped on the seat (sans cap) on the ride back.

Once we got to the house, I put Archie in the back yard, then removed West's thundershirt and put him in the backyard too. I went and let the resident dogs out into the yard, and West and Sunny had a big zoomy play while Archie sort of chased them around.

West and Sunny have been playing pretty much all the time since! They're great for each other. Both are napping now (actually, all 4 are) finally!

Toys, toys, toys...

This isn't the review, at least not yet.

A friend sent me a package, including some books/dvd's I'd asked to borrow, and conveniently, another snake very similar to the one I won from Kyjen a few months ago. So I now have two almost-identical toys, and two dogs..

I had tossed the smaller, new snake to West, and was playing with archie with another toy, but as soon as West squeaked the snake, it became more valuable. Knowing I had a similar one, I got that one out and tossed one to each dog. I'd love for Archie to figure out playing with toys TOGETHER with West, since West gets that, but it just hasn't happened yet. These snakes are long, so maybe a good tool to get them playing without having to be too close together.

West is persistent, I'll give him that. Archie eventually breaks down and plays with him for a few seconds (not with the toy) then snarks and leaves. He also decided a couple times that West could not have ANY snakes, so went and stole West's AND had his. I just tossed it back to West. West now has both snakes, but he's mostly interested in playing with Archie, who is... not.

Still, Archie is out loose and West is able to breathe, walk around, drink, move, etc without fear of being pummeled. West's dog communication skills are very good in many, many ways, including deferring to an older dog! Go West!

Catch up MORE.

I've been busy. West has been busy. Archie's been busy!! It's spring, finally!

West and Archie have been spending several hours at a time loose together inside the past week or so. This is a huge step from the "West is not permitted to breathe, blink, or otherwise move at any time" policy Archie had kept in place. The biggest difference that I can tell is that Archie got a new bed, and the cats moved outside, so the bathroom is now opened up with his bed there. West and Archie even play together occasionally, though there really is NOT room for that! Silly boys.

Anyway, this is great news. It certainly means both dogs can have way less crate time, and way more fun! It's also less stressful for me to not be worrying that Archie will snap at any moment. Good boys!

West has come such a long way. He came to Claudine's, and was car sick again for the first time since he quit many months ago. My mom brought him into town for me, and she didn't know how to get his thundershirt on, so he only had the neck piece on. That's the only difference, as far as I can tell. He recovered quickly and wasn't sick on the way home, though.

West played with Claudine's dogs a bit. Mostly, they were more interested in other things than playing with him. He took cheese from Claudine and got some cuddles. He saw several people walk past the yard, and a couple even stopped to chat with Claudine, and he did not bark. He was stressed a couple of times, so I called him to me, but he coped very well. Craig was a bit too much for him, we'll have to go more slowly with that. He had a hat on, and has facial hair. I really need to find a group of dog savvy 17 year old males. Anyone? ;)

Connor is young, which means little/no facial hair, less deep of a voice, and not so "scary" to West. I expect that's part of why he did so well with him. Great steps! Especially since there wasn't really any effort to help West adjust.. he just decided Connor was okay, on his own!

West got along fantastically with Wendy. He was quickly leaping on her soliciting pets. I've got a reaction twice now from people who know West's story from the start, and that's "Is he gonna bite me?" The answer basically is no. It's not quite that cut and dried, but believe me, you'll have LOTS of warning before he bites you. Unless he's playing tug. Sigh. work in progress. But basically at this point, I can REALLY EASILY tell when West is too stressed, and he ALWAYS barks/snarls/woo's to let people know, so it's obvious even to non-dog savvy folks. This doesn't happen hardly ever anymore though, really.

West also played with Wendy's pup, Ruby. They are great friends, and we're meeting them for a hike this week, I hope. Wendy's just got the Agility bug, so she's become very interested in learning about dog sports! :)

That's pretty much it. I got a toy to review in the next few days, but I'm at a Stacey Peardot-Goudy conference this weekend, so I'll be busy. Maybe I can get it up, but if not, it'll be next week. Any guesses as to what the toy is? ;)

One more little thing, West is FINALLY putting on a little weight! I think it's mostly the diet changes.. I've been feeding him a couple times a day, and after his "real" meals, he gets some kibble to top it off. Good boy, West.

Way behind, so much news!

I'm very very tired and very busy, so I'm WAY behind on posting..
West met Claudine and Craig. Warmed up to claudine brilliantly. Craig was not as cooperative as I needed him to be.
West met a young guy, Connor, who was out at our place. I wasn't home, but apparently he did not bark at all, and approached within a few feet without any signs of stress.
West met Wendy and had a playdate with Ruby, a 10 mo old GSD. I'm staying at Wendy's for a week in May, so the fact that they get along great is good news.
While I've been so busy earning money, Chris has been taking West out for walks to the river (ON LEASH) and he's been doing very well!
And Archie and West have spent the evening loose together. The cats moved out to the barn, so I have the bathroom opened up with a bed and "escape" for Archie. They even PLAYED.

More details later, I promise..

Photos again!

Finally, I have the camera back! I got a few pics of the boys today in the sun. Minutes after these were taken, we had huge rain drops pouring from the sky! Eep! Anyway, I really liked this shot:

Little puppy is growing up!

Some big news for West..

Today, he hung out in the yard with my roommate, and his girlfriend. They each have a large boisterous dog, and were busy working on a bike in the yard. It was perfect, as they both ignored West. He hung out very near Brad, but did not solicit attention (Brad really was ignoring him completely, though). He showed no signs of barking, though he did enjoy chasing the dogs as they played in the yard. I expect that another short session near Brad would have him soliciting attention very quickly, but I'm not sure Brad is game for it :) We'll continue to hang out near him when he's busy, as much as we can.

Wednesday, West has a play date with a friend, Claudine, and her dogs, and hopefully her husband! Hopefully, that will go well. Then we have class Thursday evening and West might come to that. Depends how Wednesday goes, though.

Biggest announcement of all, West is now listed as adoptable! Spread the word!

International Don't Be a D*ck Day!

Sorry for the non-West post. I've been away all weekend, and West spent some time with Chris. He hasn't been with him for a while, and Chris sort of started out where they left off. This proved to be a bit stressful for West, so I just let Chris know he needs to start back at the beginning. Things will progress far more quickly the second time, though!

Anyway, I'm home now. West has a playdate on Wednesday, so hopefully I can remember a camera!

This post, though, is about a video I think you should watch. It's great for anyone who feels passionately about any subject. I think there should be an entire day dedicated to the theme, see blog title. Anyway, here ya go.

Nova and West

I can't believe I forgot my camera AGAIN. I MUST remember it next time! Jeez!

West and I went on an official "play date" today. I've put a request out on the local dog training board for people with playful dogs and fenced backyards. So far, I have several volunteers, and have one more 'officially' booked for next Wednesday. I feel like a parent, trying to coordinate West's play date schedule! And it's forcing me to have a social life! Eep.

So, back to today. We loaded up in the car, just him and I and some cheese. We drove into town and found the place. I went in and asked the owner to stay inside, I'd bring West in, then she could come out with the puppy. She agreed (people are SO agreeable!) so I went to get him.

When I leave West alone in the car, I put his Calming cap on him, just so if someone is stupid and comes right up to the car, he isn't too stressed by it. He's totally fine watching people go by, but I just don't trust the average passer-by not to torment him, and it's smaller and easier to carry than a crate!

I took off his cap, and put the leash on, let him out of the car. Right away, he just wanders and saunters like he's a perfectly normal dog. I dunno what flipped with this guy, but he's a changed dog! He led me into the yard and we headed to the side farthest from the house door. Nova came out with her owner and I took West's leash off. He greeted her beautifully, looked briefly a tiny bit worried about the strange lady, I called his name, and he went right back to playing with Nova.

West was rolling around in the grass, covering his Thundershirt with dry grass, so I pulled both that and his harness off him. He shook, and was off chasing Nova again!

Nova is persistent, so she kept West going most of the 2 hours we were there. Within about 20 minutes, West approached the new stranger for pets, and cheese. This was again without any intervention, coaxing or otherwise, from me. He repeated this 4 or 5 times throughout our visit, and never barked, nor even look stressed.

Nova's housemate came out briefly. She is a bit dog reactive, but she did well. West was very appeasing to her. Nova would not play with West while her housemate was out, so she went back in the house so Nova and West could play again. Which they did.

Overall, the visit was remarkably boring. West played. Nova played. West got pets and cookies from strangers. West laid down when I asked him to. West came when I called him. Very normal-dog play-date!

When we were ready to go, Nova stayed in the yard, while her owner came out front. West was leashed at this point, and was watching people walk by on the path across the street (The street, plus maybe 5-10' of driveway, and another 2' of grass on the other side) without a problem. He was more than willing to approach his new friend for more pets, even though this was a different area, she was standing, and West was leashed. No problemo!

Back in the car, West laid down and mostly napped all the way home. He's sound asleep now, totally exhausted. Archie, on the other hand, is wondering why I'm not taking him to these play dates.. hah.

Oh. Right. Yesterday, we took all 6 up the hill for a hike to the lake. We didn't get to the lake, cause I had to be back in time for puppy class, but the dogs had a blast in the mud!

A herd of 'sheep' for West to keep gathered:

And what do you mean, I'm a pigsty? -- sigh. soo much mud right now.

West's VERY successful adventure!

I know I promised to bring the camera today, but I forgot. Sorry!

I loaded the boys into the Sprint today and we drove to meet a pet sitting client. She's been a member of the dog group for years, but she quit competing right around the time I moved here, so we'd never really met. She needs someone to look after her two dogs, and I need work, so we both win!

The hope is that I'll be able to bring the boys with me when I house sit at the end of May for her, so that's why they came along. I left West on his car-control strap, with his thundershirt and calming cap on while I went inside. Archie was crated.

When I came back out, he was just chilling, lying on the passenger seat. He did not appear worried at all!! I took Archie to the backyard, then came back and got West. I just used Archie's marti-lead (thanks to Premier for custom making that one!), so I was extra careful to make sure West was well under threshold. He walked with me beautifully and when I opened the yard gate, he WENT IN AHEAD OF ME. I'm fairly certain he hasn't ever crossed a new/unfamiliar threshold ahead of me before.

I let him off, shut the gate tight (6' privacy fence for the win!) and opened the door to let the two resident dogs into the yard. The owner of the dogs agreed to watch from inside, so as to not intimidate West. The young havanese immediately started a game with West, and he was more than willing to play! Even Archie joined in a bit! West was coping very very well, so after about 10 minutes, I invited the owner outside (into her own yard..) to see how he did. West noticed her, but kept playing. We sat outside for almost an hour, with West mostly playing, Archie eventually being removed and returned to the car, and overall great fun. West actually approached the owner totally of his own accord in a very friendly and almost confident way! He did VERY well.

The neighbour's dog was barking at us a good part of this time, and at one point, the neighbour male came out and shouted a few commands and some "no"s at the dog. West was a bit worried by this, but didn't bark and just approached me for reassurance. He was able to return to dog play almost immediately! Fantastic bounce back!

Eventually, we had to call it quits, so I put West back in the car (with thundershirt and calming cap in place) on his strap. I went to meet the neighbour, and when I returned to the car, West was almost totally relaxed, sprawled across both seats. I had to shove him over to sit down! Normally, he leaps up as soon as he hears me.

After we got home, I played with Archie out in the yard for a bit, then went in. I brought Archie in, let him get a drink, then put him away and opened the door for West.. who bounded in, covered HEAD TO TOE IN MUD! Sigh. I guess he went down to the creek for.. a roll? Jeez. His thundershirt and harness both need a wash!

All in all, a very very good day.

Look how CLEAN everything is!! Sigh. Spring, I love you, but.. mud?!

Catch up!

Wow, sorry guys. I need to start posting daily again.. I need to get the camera so I have photos to post daily again!!

West has come so far from the beginnings of this blog. He's still likely to woof when he's worried, but always moving away, escaping if that's an option.

He greeted Lindsay without even a worried look yesterday. He has met her twice before, and both times required some serious time and her staying perfectly still, etc. This time, she came into the RV and he was crated, uncovered. He was fine when we entered (did his usual LET ME OUT fuss, but settled), then gave a random demand bark (very much NOT his "I'm scared" bark). I decided to give it a shot and opened up his crate. Lindsay is VERY dog savvy, so I wasn't worried she'd do anything weird or be terribly upset if he did go off barking.

West came out of his crate, leapt on me, and when I asked him to get off, he approached Lindsay right away. Almost totally soft body language, seeking attention. Put his feet up on her, got some pets from her. We hung out for about 5-10 minutes inside and he was great. I let Archie out and we went outside, and he was also great outside, though I was tossing the ball for Archie, so mostly he herded Arch.

Still... A few months ago, this would NOT have worked. A few months ago, he leapt barking at my sister, twice. And he'd met her far more times than he's met Lindsay. Good job, West!

On another note, I spent a couple hours out in the yard this evening (yay for warm!) putting all the agility equipment together. I now have 4 complete jumps, one pvc 2x2, and an 8 'rung' ladder. The ladder needs some.. repairs.. but I think it will be okay for now. The jumps are still in great shape. I'm quite amazed at the people who say their PVC equipment doesn't last more than a season.. This stuff is at least 4 years old now, and I think I have a total of 4 broken pieces (mostly Ts that were frozen to the ground when a certain border collie puppy ran straight into the upright/weavepole and SNAPPED THE T IN HALF). They've been moved in a not-very-secured moving truck, stored outside all that time, and generally not treated very well. Even the taped bars are still in fine shape. I guess I'm lucky!

While I was doing all this, West managed to get Archie to play a couple times, for about 20 seconds at a time. Better than nothing. I'm hoping that as I spend more time just busy outside, they will play more. West is coming into town with me tomorrow for a possible play date, depending on how many people are around, etc. Hopefully, it goes well! I'll try to bring my camera! Jeez!

Finally, some well overdue photos!

Today, we had the magic combination of SUN, a CAMERA, and my remembering to TAKE PHOTOS all in the same time period! Amazing!! My sister must still have her camera, so I borrowed the 'good' camera from Chris (which actually belongs to my sister's boyfriend.. long story!) to get some sunny dog photos today!

I wanted to get some nice shots of West wearing his fully-matching Premier gear. I know we all decided on Royal Blue, but sometimes things don't happen the way you expect :) My mom placed the order for me, and got a bit mixed up.. So we ended up with Cadet blue instead. I think he looks quite smashing! ;)

Trying to get photos of this dog on a leash is like trying to nail jello to a wall. I dropped the end of the leash over the weave poles, so I could get a few feet away and try to get some decent photos. He knocked the poles over, then proceeded to stand there looking stressed as heck!

West says "Why are you making me sit here, away from you and with no archie to chase??"

So, I snapped a few pics quickly, then moved on. This was not going to give me the photos I wanted!

I managed to get this one:

No, I have no idea either. Maybe just before a full body shake?

Here, we're getting closer:

But of course, It's of his shadowed side. Sigh.

West rolled in the snow some, and I got a couple "ok" ones of that, showing the underside of the harness..

So then I hooked his leash over a tree branch. This was far less stressful (Maybe because archie was running after a ball at this point, or..?) so I got some nicer photos.

I love this one, as it shows exactly how a GL should be fit differently from a collar, and is also kind of an interesting photo. I wish his harness strap was visible too..

I took off his GL and leash, and got some shots of him in his usual "travel wear" with his muzzle on too. The Thundershirt fits nicely over or under the harness. If I need the back attachment on the harness, I put it on top. If I just need the car control ring, it sits between the chest and belly straps of the thundershirt, so it doesn't matter which is on top.

West straddling pipe and looking sort of evil in the shadows..

Waiting to pounce on Archie

Ready to goooo

The Car Control ring:

Hunting Archie:

All in all, I'm very happy with the equipment. Just as I was taking that last photo, new roomie came up the driveway to his car with his two dogs. West would love to play with them, I think, but new roomie is a dude, so I sent West into the yard. Archie charged over to the dogs (I've met both, but he hadn't met one of them, nor the roomie), I called I'd be right back, and locked West in the motorhome (I can't lock him in the yard anymore. He jumps over. Thanks archie..). I went over to chat with roomie and Archie had some amazing zoomy fun with the two big dogs! Wahoo! Archie rarely plays, so this was very nice. We'll have to get them together again. When I came back in the motorhome, West was sitting by the door inside, and Archie didn't bite him :D

West needs to spend WAY more time watching things/dogs move without being allowed to chase them. Impulse control. Pronto!

Very bad blogger..

Holy smokes! I missed updating you guys on West's last class, and a few other things! Life has been busy!

West had his last Rally-O class on Thursday. I'd been forgetting his L-Theanine, and I definitely noticed a difference. He did well, overall, though. I'm working on shaping a Bow and a Rollover, as stress relief tricks :)

He's mostly been spending his time as usual. He still loves chasing Archie out in the yard, and has quit harassing the chickens now. He's ALMOST figured out how to catch popcorn if I throw it just right. I think I managed to get one piece out of about 50 into his mouth! So, we're getting there.

We went for a hike today up by the dump. West rode in the back on his new harness/car control strap, cause we took the little car (did anyone else notice fuel is WAY expensive??). He did very well! He ran and chased and played with Gypsy. He tried to play with Candy, but she wasn't interested. He has adjusted very nicely to his body harness (Premier Sure-fit) and matching collar.

After the walk, we stopped at the gas station to fuel up. West had been so quiet, I sort of forgot about him, until he raised his head and noticed a big strange man about 4' from the car (fueling up his own truck)!!! He didn't bark, and I was able to easily redirect him and give him some cookies. Good boy, West! That certainly would not have been possible even a month ago! His reactions when startled are starting to change from "OMG" to "Hey, we're playing that silly stranger game again, aren't we?" which is fantastic.

Archie, Gypsy and Sheela debuted at their first AAC agility trial. I had my sister run Sheela for me so I could focus on Archie. There is video of one of Sheela's runs, and nothing else! But there was a pro photographer there, so there may be photos. Both Gypsy and Sheela got refusals in Jumpers, but otherwise did well. Archie was unable to cope with the situation both runs, so he didn't get to do much. Sheela got 22 snooker points on a VERY difficult snooker course (for those who know agility, the teeter was #5 and the weaves were the #7. Sheela hasn't got a teeter or weaves yet.. and #6 was chute, jump, tunnel!! So, way too many yards for her to be able to get enough points), but had a total blast. Gypsy got one snooker point, I think. It was cold, but we had a decent time. Lots of work to do with Archie! :)

Leave something in the comments if you want me to write, video or photograph something specific. I'm considering making this blog a bit more general and not focusing on West so much, since his life is pretty routine now. Any thoughts on that?

Poooooo on bad bloggers!

Another person!

West met Julie last night! Julie is a trainer with 5 Star, and was filling in for Mary teaching last night's obedience class. I was asked to show up early to turn on the heat and set up, so I brought the boys along and did some box work with Archie, and some no-biting-Archie work with West. He jumped a 5 foot xpen, by the way. Note to self.

Then, I put Archie out in the car and crated West in his usual spot in the back room. I helped Julie teach the basic class, then there was no Basic Level 2 tonight, so I asked if she wanted to stay and meet him. She said of course, so she sat on the floor and I went to get him.

I got him quite close, then realized he was in "heeling/working" mode and not paying a ton of attention to what scary thing was there, so I backed way off. We did some sorta-BAT stuff, marking and reinforcing (with distance) for looking at the trigger. It worked well, and he loosened up. I did some wide circle walking around her, and got to a point about 10 feet away with him being okay!

At this point, I had Julie take out the treats and she tossed them at him. Slowly, he got closer and more comfortable. We gave him a couple release breaks to run off some stress, but within about 20 minutes of that, he was able to approach her hand for scratches. He tried to get right in her lap at one point. Overall, very successful. She had to go, so we didn't work on her standing up, etc. but he did very well!

Go Westy!!
